Romans, Gambling, and Saturnalia: A discussion of gaming and gambling in Roman culture and some of the games they played. Stick around after or visit the gaming corner later to learn to play some Roman games and wager nuts and coins.

Classroom 1

1-3pm Scratching the Surface: an introduction to sgraffito

Come learn a little bit about the history of this centuries-old pottery technique, then try it out for yourself! Participants will design and decorate a plate, which will be fired after the event and delivered for pickup at Val Day.  
*Materials limit: 6 participants*
*Class fee 5$*
*Age restriction 10+ years, under 13 should bring an adult*

Classroom 2

10-11am Intro to finger loop braiding

Learn one of two basic fingerloop braid patterns along with some history. Make-and-take or bring your own crochet cotton and scissors. Bring crochet cotton and scissors, if desired. 

1-2pm Making wire-wrapped rings

Learn how to make beautiful wire-wrapped rings using a quick and easy-to-learn method. Keep them for yourself or give them away as tokens. Wire, beads and a limited number of ring mandrels will be provided. Bring your own ring mandrel if you have one. 
*Suitable for ages 12 and up* 

2-3pm Into to moneying 

Overview of how to make dies and strike coins. Learn about the tools needed, how to make punches, cut dies, and strike coins.

3-4pm Hands on coining 

Get hands on experience striking coins. Come by anytime during the class time and strike some coins to keep. 
*Must be old enough to swing a 4lb hammer safely*
*$2 fee to cover materials and handout*

10-11am Saturnalia History

Come learn about the history of Roman Saturnalia

11-12 Amo Amas Amat: An Intro to Classic Latin

Roman numerals and root words absorbed into English will be our starting point for exploring some basics of the classic Latin language.

A quick introduction to retaining in the Midrealm

2-3pm Slavic Paganism Before Vladimir

A brief history of Slavic religious practices in the era before Prince Valdimir converted to Christianity (988 CE). 
*Please note we will discuss what could be considered “adult topics” of human sacrifice, polytheistic religion, and attitudes toward gender and sexuality.*
Bring open minds and an enthusiasm to explore less-considered aspects of history.

Classroom 4

10am-12 Beaded Cabochons

Learn how to use beads to secure cabochons to fabric.  This can be used to accessorize garb or create jewelry. Bring magnifiers if needed for small work.
*Students should be able to use a needle and scissors safely*
*$5 fee*

1-2pm Make a circlet

We will make circlets using wire wrapping
*must be old enough to use pliers*

2-3pm How To Make Roman Fibulae

Learn how to make fibulae (beaded pins) like they had in ancient Rome!
*Age restriction 12 and up, or younger if with a guardian, as it will require some fine motor skills and involves beads, which are a choking hazard to little ones.*

3-4pm Viking wire weaving

Learn the basics of viking wire weaving!
*ages 12 and up, younger require parental assistance*

10-11am Have Fun Storming the Castle: Historical Architecture

The neighbors are invading!  We need to protect ourselves.  We will discuss ways to both defend and take a castle.  Note, this is an historical architecture class and these techniques should NOT be used by our glorious fighters during the battle of La Rochelle (though they would work!). 1-2pm Worth Your Salt: a Short History of Salt and Commerce

Come and learn about how salt was mined, what it was used for, and how it factored into ancient tax schemes!

2-3pm Indian clubs to increase strength, mobility and fighting ability 

Learn simple basic techniques with light Indian clubs that you can use to improve strength, flexibility/ mobility, endurance and your fight game. I will have a supply of light weight clubs. Feel free to bring your own if you have any.

3-4pm Autistic Awareness for non autistics

This class is designed for non Autistics to gain awareness of Autistics.
